SatCom Update: It's a Buyer's Market
As prices come down amid fierce competition, purchasers of new or upgraded equipment stand to benefit:

The maritime market for satellite communications is changing rapidly. In fact, it’s in turmoil, contends Alan Gottlieb, Managing Director of Gottlieb International Group in Arlington, Virginia. Inmarsat started making waves in August of 2010 with the announcement of Global Xpress, to be introduced in 2013 as a potential game-changing effort to catch up with the VSAT (unlimited data for a fixed monthly fee) providers that started taking a considerable amount of its business. The VSAT Industry: Regulatory Issues
Global VSAT Forum Regulatory Working Group has developed the 'International VSAT Policy Declaration' with regulatory recommendations and guidelines

Universal Connectivity!  This is no longer an academic subject, thanks to the availability today of VSAT systems that can cost-effectively provide telecommunications in the most challenging applications. These include no less than rural telecommunications, disaster recovery, telemedicine, distance learning, corporate networks, and much more. But. . .
National Disconnects: In many countries where such solutions are most needed, outdated regulations stand in the way of the economic progress that is facilitated through the use of VSAT systems and services. These hurdles include:

  1. High licensing fees

  2. Cumbersome red tape

  3. Cost-prohibitive customs duties

  4. Slow response to license applications
